Well my first recital as a grad student at MSU has officially passed. I had a chamber recital as a member of a2 percussion this past weekend. The concert was a success as our first event and I look forward to all the work I will be able to do with Kelsey Tamayo in the future. Working up a recital with another individual was quite an experience and one that I think I will continue to learn from in the coming weeks as Kelsey and I plan what lies ahead for us. There will be more coming on that soon. In the meantime, here are some pictures from our recital!
NewMusicBox » The Power List: Why Women Aren’t Equals In New Music Leadership and Innovation
I try not to post things like this too often, but this article resonated with me too much to ignore. I find myself encountering the issue of how to function as a young woman in the new music world. It’s a quick read and not intended for one gender exclusively! Take a look.

NewMusicBox » The Influence Engine: Steve Reich and Pop Music
Interesting article on New Music Box by Tim Rutherford-Johnson. Check it out!
“Popular music appears to gain credibility; new music appears to gain relevance. As long as the “influence” of Reich’s music can be traced back up the chain, the narrative will keep feeding itself.”

Acceptance Letters to SoSI!!!
Myself and Kelsey Tamayo have been accepted to the So Percussion Summer Institute (SoSI), which is a two-week chamber music seminar for college-age percussionists and composers. The members of So Percussion serve as faculty in rehearsal, performance, and discussion of contemporary music. This year guests Steve Reich, and Ji Hye Jung will also be visiting. Can’t wait!

Cold Water, Dry Stone-NASA Region 5
I had a performance earlier today with the student based new-music ensemble from MSU, Collective Behavior (CoBe) and it was a very wonderful experience. We performed the piece Cold Water, Dry Stone by Evan Chambers at the Region 5 NASA (North American Saxophone Association) conference. It was our first public performance of the piece, with 3 more to come in the next few months. I’m so excited to be playing new music with great musicians and colleagues!
Thanks guys!

Steve Schick talks about (and performs) the origins and global development of percussion music. Very enlightening and entertaining. To any of you who have read his book “The Percussionist’s Art,” it’s so nice to hear many of those ideas “from the horses’ mouth” as they say. For those of you have not, enjoy some fantastic music and presentation of ideas.
