The Beginnings of Contemporary Percussion Music w/Steven Schick

Steve Schick talks about (and performs) the origins and global development of percussion music. Very enlightening and entertaining. To any of you who have read his book “The Percussionist’s Art,” it’s so nice to hear many of those ideas “from the horses’ mouth” as they say. For those of you have not, enjoy some fantastic music and presentation of ideas.

Percussion Duo

Here are my five “noises” for Paul Lanksy’s percussion duet Travel Diary. Yes, that is indeed a door nob. I finally have the fortune to be playing this piece, and with an exceptional colleague at MSU, Kelsey Tamayo. We’re thinking of playing more percussion duos seeing as we’re enjoying this one so much. Any suggestions?

Next up: Grad School

I suppose I could have made this post months ago, but my luck is not quite that of the Irish and so I wanted to wait until things were as official as they could be.

So, I am officially a graduate student in the percussion studio at Michigan State University. I’ve moved to Michigan (“The Great White North” according to some of the Floridians I left behind) and am incredibly excited for what is ahead of me.

I’ll be trying to make more use of this blog by documenting my various musical/educational/any remotely interesting endeavors.

Collide Music Festival at UCF

Today is the second day of an event to celebrate the collaboration of percussion and music composition. Intended for composers and percussionists alike, the festival includes three concerts featuring the Furman University Percussion Ensemble, high school percussion groups from around Central Florida, the Central Florida Composers Forum, and the UCF Percussion Ensemble.

On tonight’s final concert I will be premiering a duo with  fellow percussionist here at UCF, Matt Roberts. The duo Providence for marimba and vibraphone was written by student composer, Brandon Miller. This is shaping up to be an exciting weekend. Many thanks go out to all those who have helped to make it such a success.
